A documentary about journalism grantee The 19th has just been released on streaming platforms, chronicling the nonprofit newsroom’s launch, triumphs and challenges. “Breaking the News” features deliberations around and reporting on key major news events such as the coronavirus pandemic, the killing of Breonna Taylor, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The documentary premiered at the TriBeCa Film Festival in June 2023 and was first broadcast on PBS in February 2024.

Heising-Simons Foundation awarded $25.6 million to systems change efforts across 57 grants during the second quarter of 2024. This latest round of system change funding supports efforts to advance climate and clean energy policies, ensure that AI does not disrupt the upcoming 2024 election, and develop a clearer understanding of the causes of the profound underrepresentation of women in the fields of mathematical and physical sciences.

Several grantees of the Heising-Simons Foundation have been awarded unrestricted grants in the $1-2 million range for “outstanding work advancing the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles,” Yield Giving announced this week. Our grantees join a total pool of 361 community-led nonprofit recipients. Yield Giving is the philanthropic organization established by MacKenzie Scott in 2022.

FRONTLINE documentary film 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL, made in partnership with the Associated Press (AP), won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film at the Oscars ceremony in March 2024. 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL tells the important and powerful story from the perspective of an AP team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol during the Russian invasion. In 2023, the journalists behind the film won a Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for the film as well.

MethaneSAT, a new satellite that will find and measure methane emissions with unparalleled precision – including emissions that other satellites simply can’t see, successfully launched from Vanderberg Space Force Base on March 4, 2024, with the aid of SpaceX. MethaneSAT is funded by Climate and Clean Energy grantee Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Heising-Simons Foundation Board member Mark Heising serves as Chair of the Board of EDF and sits on the steering committee of MethaneSAT.
