    Paying for college is an expensive venture, but did you know you can take advantage of special tax breaks just for college students and their parents? These benefits come in the form of tax credits and deductions when you file your income tax return. What’s the difference? A credit reduces the amount of income tax you have to pay.     As 6,000 credit union advocates gathered in the nation’s capital this week, banking trade groups renewed their attacks on the credit union tax exemption. As you might expect, credit union advocates returned fire. The newly created America’s Credit Unions trade group brought the advocates to Washington to “hike the hill” and tell their elected representatives why credit unions are better than banks.

    Credit union wins require coordinated advocacy from the entire movement and at every level, America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle told attendees at the 2024 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Monday. Nussle addressed the GAC for the first time as the leader of the new America’s Credit Unions, and promised the organization will fight for and listen to its members.
