For the past three years, 60-year-old Dharmachand Jain has been commuting from Agarwal Farm in Mansarovar to Gopalpura in Jaipur. He leaves home half an hour early each day to walk 500 metres to catch the 9A bus, as there is no facility to reach the bus stand. “Many times, the bus is not on time, so I have to take an e-rickshaw or a magic van. A bus journey costs me Rs 30 daily but using a magic van or any other mode costs Rs 50-Rs 60. The monthly pass and lower fares make the bus more affordable.

Last month, a caracal was recorded by a camera trap for the first time in Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan. The forest department plans to increase the number of camera traps in the location, to better understand the nocturnal wildcat’s presence and range. For crafting effective conservation strategies, experts call for more in-depth studies of the caracal, with a focus beyond protected areas too.

“The area was scarred with deep pits and hills of mining waste. Women were afraid to pass by the land since it was so deserted,” recalls Shanti Devi. The area she refers to is the land around Dabla talab, a reservoir that was only source of water in her village of Uttamdesar, before the operationalisation of the Indira Gandhi Canal that passes through the region. For over two decades, the village saw rampant gypsum extraction.
