    It was a Tuesday night at Point Loma Playhouse and Tony Calabrese stood ready to guide his comedic charges. The members of ActLiveNow’s fall comedy workshop have been learning and rehearsing since Sept. 10 to prepare for live seven-minute stand-up performances beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the playhouse, in the Point Loma Assembly building at 3035 Talbot St.The workshop, which runs through Oct. 15, drew participants of varying backgrounds and levels of comedic history.

    Ocean Beach Elementary School has a new mural and outdoor reading garden — the latest in a series of campus refurbishments, with more coming up. The mural and garden were officially unveiled Aug. 23 after several months in the making. The mural, originally painted more than 20 years ago, got a makeover courtesy of local artist Rob Tobin. The reading garden was created by Best Choice Home Remodeling and funded by the Point Loma Optimist Club.

    Enjoy some tasty bites, music and locally-produced art during the annual HeArt of PB Restaurant Walk. The self-guided tour will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 along Garnet Avenue. Tickets are $35 if bought in advance at pacificbeach.org and $40 on the day of the event. Proceeds will benefit Discover Pacific Beach, a non-profit organization working to host local events, preserve the community and implement improvements across Pacific Beach’s neighborhoods.
