For millions of New Yorkers, the elevator ride is a daily routine – a chance to meditate quietly while avoiding awkward eye contact with fellow passengers. Many fixate on the numbers that light up consecutively as each floor is reached. Or almost consecutively. It is a curious fact that most buildings skip the thirteenth floor.
