Things start to slow down for the week of April 20th, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to watch. We have a series finale for The Conners and the season finales of Fire Country and NCIS: Sydney. You should also catch the premieres of Andor, You, and Étoile. Meanwhile, The Equalizer has some exciting guest stars scheduled, and Will Trent promises to shock you.

It’s a season finale that manages to stick with the usual formula while also having us second-guess what we clearly know is the best way to wrap things up. Matlock Season 1 Episodes 18 and 19, “Tricks of the Trade (Parts 1 and 2),” keeps us guessing until the bitter end. Having an open ending allows the show to explore further what we learned in the back half of this season. From Matty’s deceptions to Olympia’s discoveries, there is no shortage of paths Matlock can take during Season 2.

*This review contains spoilers. Be sure to watch the episode before you continue reading! It is never easy to say goodbye to one of your own. And 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15, “Lab Rats,” reminds us of this with one of the biggest sacrifices the show has ever seen. While our first reactions are obvious tears and disbelief, there is also denial and anger mixed in there. After all, some of the best character deaths are done in a way that makes us feel like we are losing a close family member.

As we inch ever closer to saying goodbye, the lack of development for these characters becomes that much more obvious. Sure, we get by well enough on The Conners Season 7 Episode 4, “Danny Boy, the Interview, the New Hire, and the Hanging Chad,” thanks to the familiar comfort of the family dynamic. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to give this show a stellar score. At some point, they have to stop relying on old tricks and start moving the characters toward a meaningful conclusion.

James Ian was jetlagged and physically struggling on the early April morning he arrived to set in Manhattan to film Emergency Plan for the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, a contest during which disabled filmmakers have six days to produce a 5-minute short film. He had flown to the city from Los Angeles the night before the only day of principal photography.
