Boaters Anticipate Ocean City Inlet Dredging

OCEAN CITY, MD. - Dredging in the Ocean City Inlet is set to begin today, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). When WBOC visited the site this morning, the dredger ship was floating along the shore of the inlet ready to start its work. According to the Maryland DNR, the dredging will occur between the Isle of Wight and the Inlet channels. Brian Behe, a boater from the Sunset Marina, says he's ready to see the work begin.
Cambridge Police Investigating Two Shooting Incidents

DORCHESTER CO., MD. - The Cambridge Police Department is currently investigating two shooting incidents from over the weekend. According to a statement from the department, the first incident occurred just after 4:30 on Saturday morning, when Cambridge officers responded to a report of multiple shots fired on Pine St. Police officials say they located a 19-year-old Easton man with a gunshot wound in the leg near the reported location.
Tom's Cove Campground's Miniature Pony Swim

CHINCOTEAGUE, VA - While the life-sized pony swim won't begin until Wednesday, a miniature one has already begun at Tom's Cove Campground. Salisbury local Elsie H. Jones, who spends much of her summers with family at the campground, designed a miniature model of the town of Chincoteague, including the beloved Pony Swim. Jones says she started designing the model last winter. She was inspired by some of the tiny buildings that she had purchased from an estate sale.
Oxford Park Renovation Seeking Community Suggestions

TALBOT CO, MD. - The Town of Oxford is looking for suggestions on what to add to their new community park. According to a post on the community's Facebook page, the town obtained a grant to renovate the unused baseball field behind the Oxford Community Center into a useable community space. The post says that, after a public discussion held on site on June 21st, town leaders want to give the Oxford community one last chance to input suggestions on how best to use the space.
Dorchester County Man Charged in Assault Case

DORCHESTER CO., MD. - A Cambridge man has been charged on multiple counts after Cambridge Police Department officers responded to an assault call on Wednesday afternoon. The call came at 12:55pm after two victims on Muir St. reported they had been assaulted by three men, according to the Cambridge Police Department. The department says that one of the suspects held the victims at gunpoint.
Talbot County Burn Ban to be Lifted on July 21st

TALBOT CO., MD - Following this week’s rain, the Talbot County burn ban is set to conclude on July 21st, according to the Talbot County Council. The month-long ban prohibited all open-air burning throughout the county. The Talbot County Burn Ban Committee has stated that after the 21st, resident’s may return to normal open-air burning activities. Despite the ban being lifted, Talbot County Emergency services encourages residents to continue practicing fire safety.
Truitt Street Closed Due to Water Service Replacement

SALISBURY, MD - Truitt St. in Salisbury will be blocked to all traffic, including emergency vehicles, starting at 8:30am on Friday, July 19th, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office. The work is expected to conclude around 3pm. The blockage comes as part of the city’s efforts to improve their Water Distribution System. The Mayor’s Office says the Department of Waterworks Utilities Division will be replacing a water service at 425 Truitt Street.

Every Sunday afternoon, drum beats can be heard echoing throughout Meridian Hill Park, called Malcolm X Park by locals, in northwest Washington. The park’s weekly drum circle began during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, stemming from a memorial service held in 1965 for the late Muslim minister and civil rights activist Malcolm X’s. The circle has continued for almost 60 years since. Musicians, dancers and people from all walks of life join together in or near the circle.
Multimedia: Pledges and promises

This semester, AWOL’s multimedia team investigated how students feel about Greek Life on American University’s campus. This investigation comes two years after AU’s Abolish Greek Life movement. The movement started with an Instagram account detailing national student statistics and testimonials. The organization then advocated for two student government referendums in Spring 2022, calling for the abolishment of social Greek Life and the start of social alternatives. The movement won on both motions.

In the fast paced environment of American University, it can be so easy to become caught up in classes, work and everything else on campus. Every once in a while, it’s nice to take a step outside and appreciate the beauty that is right on our doorstep.
