As a vanlifer and travel enthusiast, Nathan Martinelli lives for exciting, unexpected moments. And yet, when he recently spotted someone huge trapped at the bottom of a jagged cliffside, the adventurer couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit apprehensive. “When I looked down, I saw the cow looking right up at me,” Martinelli said in a video for The Dodo. “It was pretty steep, and you could see where the cow went down and fell.”Eager to help, Martinelli scaled the cliffside down to the rocky shoreline.

Standing near the beach in Ocean City, Maryland, on a recent family trip, Roxanne Flanagan startled when she heard her daughter screaming. “I ran down there to see what was going on,” Flanagan told The Dodo. “As I'm running, all I hear her scream is, ‘It's a snake, it's a snake.’ And I'm like, ‘No, it's probably just a stick that had just washed up from the shore.’”But it turns out the little girl was right. The figure wasn’t a stick at all.

On a recent morning, a man in the Bronx, New York, left his home and found someone he didn’t expect. A black dog was shivering in the street, chained to a pole nearby. The man brought the pup some food and water, then he called local rescuer Jennifer Rodriguez for help. Rodriguez’s eyes widened as she approached the scene and saw the dog all alone, curled in a tight ball. “My heart was shattered,” Rodriguez told The Dodo.

Maneuvering the path to get a better look, the woman realized the speck was actually an animal — a terrified dog trapped 100 feet in the air. The woman reached out to local authorities and told them the news.

A few years ago, Australian sportsman and animal lover Jason Breen set out to go wing foiling — a combination of kitesurfing and windsurfing. According to Breen, the conditions were perfect. It was a bright day, without a cloud in the sky. As Breen careened through the water on his board, he felt a familiar rush of joy and adrenaline. Then, something completely unexpected happened. “All I remember is looking up, and the whole sky was blocked out,” Breen said in a video for The Dodo.
