Just a few weeks ago, Mairead Ronan and Jenny Kelly tackled the subject of menopause on their podcast and it was one that struck a chord with so many women. Mairead, who is 45 and Jenny, who is 53, are both mothers of 18-year-olds - Mairead’s Dara and Jenny’s Kate are both doing the Leaving Cert this year. But one of the big hurdles that women their age face is negotiating all the symptoms menopause throws at us, and times have changed dramatically since Jenny first began to experience symptoms.

Zara Devlin laughs when she remembers pestering her father to print out the full script of the first Pirates Of The Caribbean film. Growing up in the countryside of Co Tyrone, in the small townland of Kildress between Cookstown and Omagh, her parents worried that she might be too much of an introvert, so sent her to an after-school drama club. Like so many Irish children, Zara was also a regular at the local feiseanna.

Darina Porter is a woman who firmly believes that every day is a good day. For, after a diagnosis of breast cancer 27 years ago, she is thankful that she's been around to see her three boys grow into fantastic young men. Her youngest was just two years old when Darina received her diagnosis and she admits that she took life by the horns afterwards.

In 2024, 263 organ transplants were carried out in Ireland, thanks to the generosity of 84 deceased donors and 30 living kidney donors. Avril Whitty, 38, is from Clearinstown in Wexford. She is married to Justin and they have two children. Avril underwent a liver transplant at St. Vincent’s University Hospital in the summer of 2023. Sometimes, out of the blue, Kiera Dignam will hear her father’s voice suddenly coming from a radio, a post on Facebook or a TV screen, and the pain of hearing him is almost too much to bear. In just a few weeks, it will be the second anniversary of Christy Dignam’s death and though for some, it would be a great comfort to hear the voice of a loved one who has died, for Kiera it brings back a wave of grief that is still too painful to cope with.
