One in 10 women in the country still use harmful and unsafe methods to terminate an unintended pregnancy. A new report released on Friday showed that a small fraction of women still use unsafe methods such as inserting sharp objects into the vagina, drinking a toxic or caustic substance or taking inappropriate medication to induce abortion.

Kenya recorded 792,694 induced abortions in 2023, more than 80 per cent among married women. The latest report released by the Africa Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) on Friday showed that nearly half of the women who presented in health facilities for post abortion complications were women aged between 25 to 34 years.

Nairobi and the Central region have the highest rate of induced abortions in the country. A report released on Friday by the Africa Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) shows the regions recorded 234,125 induced abortions in 2023. This is followed by Nyanza and Western region with 222,196 induced abortions in 2023. Rift Valley region had 153,314 cases, 108,910 in the Eastern region and 74,150 cases in Coast and North Eastern region.

President William Ruto’s senior economic advisor Moses Kuria has condemned the incident in which goons stormed a church service where former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua was in attendance. Kuria through his X handle termed the incident as ungodly. "This is utterly ungodly. Leave your backward and primitive political wars out of places of worship. Today was AIPCA Kenol reloaded. The lightning that will strike us is still loading. Pole sana Gachagua," he said through the tweet.
