It's like giving a burglar the right to sneak in to your house, take your precious things, and run off without consequences. Your only right would be to notice that Great Aunt Anna's engagement ring had gone, and then go through a pile of admin to retain your rights to Anna's Ring.

    When I embarked on writing this piece about my upper arms – my floppy flappy bingo wings – the first thing I did was search through five years of summer holidays and sea swimming photos on my phone. It took a while. I was looking for a ‘before’ picture from the days when I didn’t go to the gym three times a week, to show how fat and flabby my upper arms used to be. But in every single shot where I’m sleeveless, my arms are up in the air, in a jaunty ‘ha ha!’ showbiz pose.

    When I read the recent news story – with the research from Australia’s Griffith University – saying that exercise can add over a decade of healthy life, I had a rare moment of pure, smug pleasure. Because at the age of 65, I always take the stairs – and I even go to the gym. Five times a week preferably, but never fewer than two visits. I row three kilometres in under 18 minutes, lift 35 kilos on the leg press, and do stationary jumps up to a 20cm platform.
