Barrell Craft Spirits has pioneered a brand built exclusively on mingling barrels from different states and finishing them with unique spirits barrels. American whiskey producers all over the country are experimenting with barrel finishes, and non-distiller producers are finding that well-done barrel finishes can set their sourced whiskey apart from the rest. Secondary new barrels have even less historical relevance within the American whiskey industry.

Different groups have different approaches to choosing a single barrel. Some will collaborate from the start while others will secretly take notes and then come together when everyone is ready. Some will vote, some will rank choices, and some will assign numerical values to be averaged out with the most points choosing the winner. After you’ve chosen your single barrel, the group chooses the name that will go on the stickers on the front of all of the bottles.

As a ninth generation Louisvillian, I love seeing the city’s history revived. Mellwood Avenue in Louisville was named for the Mellwood Distillery, a pre-Prohibition era distilling company that went through several changes, went out of business during Prohibition, and was bought up by another entity after Prohibition ended. Pursuit Spirits has resurrected this once popular brand after discovering that their warehouse was once part of the Mellwood Distillery.

Mattingly 1845 has partnered with the Navy SEAL Foundation on a series of whiskeys, and $30 from the sale of each bottle will go directly to the foundation.

At a doctor’s appointment late last year, I was told that I needed to cut gluten out of my diet. I said that would be no problem. I wasn’t eating bread at that time anyway, and there’s no gluten in bourbon. The doctor stopped me and insisted that there is gluten in bourbon. His proof was that “they won’t put gluten free on the label.” Instead, he urged me to only drink Tito’s vodka. I assured him that gluten doesn’t carry over in the distillation process because it’s too heavy.
