Feminist historical fiction, that is, that family of novels reinterpreting the past through the female gaze—is booming. Why do you think that is? It’s so interesting. I looked at my book choices and realised that both Pat Barker’s Silence of the Girls and Madeline Miller’s Circe came out in 2018. I think the #MeToo movement had an impact on how they were received. With my own book, The Tower, there has been some focus on the way I’ve portrayed women and, specifically, women’s bodies.

Anyone who enjoyed Maggie O’Farrell’s memoir, I AM, I AM, I AM, or her Shakespeare-inspired work of fiction, HAMNET, will be delighted that her third novel, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US --- originally published in the United Kingdom in 2004 --- is finally available in the United States in a paperback edition. An unusual multilayered love story, the book possesses the psychological acuity and fine writing that are hallmarks of O’Farrell’s other work.

Recent reading update:Continuing to dip into Daniel Mason’s North Woods. Each chapter, or episode, could stand on its own. It’s a novel worth taking my time over. Raced through two crime fiction novels, both with deep, dark looks at aspects of the human character. S.A. Cosby’s All the Sinners Bleed is a fantastic novel of a Virginia small town Black sheriff dealing with racism and corruption. It was definitely worth waiting for my turn to come up on the library hold list.

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell This is a fictional portrait of the young Duchess Lucrezia de' Medici, who, at the age of 13, was promised in marriage to Alfonso II, the Duke of Ferrara. The story of her short marriage, two years later in mid-1500s Italy, is told through her own eyes and perceptions. Her husband turns out to be controlling and cruel of nature. Her death is both untimely and suspicious. For fans of historical fiction, this novel is a must-read.
