Visiting Torridon turns you into a time traveller. It takes more than four hours from Scotland’s central belt, the last section dominated by towering mountains built on rocks more than two billion years old. Here, in a spectacular Highland landscape so ancient it was once joined to North America, sits Britain’s most northerly five-star hotel. That hotel, The Torridon, was built in 1887 as a hunting lodge by the first Earl of Lovelace, the husband of the computer pioneer Ada.

It is the best idea I have heard in years from an SNP voice: Scotland should help produce weapons for Ukraine. It came, last week, from Stewart McDonald MSP, a former defence spokesman at Westminster, and it was welcomed — albeit cautiously — by a Scottish government spokesman.
