In 2019, the descendants of an erstwhile zamindar family entered into an “agreement of sale” for 91 acres of land to Azure Power Forty Pvt Ltd in Mikir Bamuni Grant village in Assam’s Nagaon district to build a solar power plant. The land deal directly affected the livelihoods of at least 60 families who were dependent on agriculture.

In February 2024, 42-year-old farmer Ananda Bhairu Shinde woke up to a distress call from a friend, informing him that their village land in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district was falling under the Shaktipeeth Expressway project. Ananda said he, along with other village farmers, were already worried after witnessing the sight of drones being flown over their village land for a “survey” in January. “I immediately checked the file of the Gazette notification I received from my friend.

In 2021, 63-year-old Thupa Singh, an Adivasi farmer in the Daldalia village in Jharkhand’s Latehar district, found himself and eight other families in jeopardy. Thupa said that contractors and workers had arrived to construct Eklavya Model Residential School on the land they had been living on for generations. To their surprise, the portion of village land these families were living, cultivating, and paying taxes for was found to be already included in the state’s controversial Land Bank.

On June 22, Marufa Khanam and her husband Samaruddin stepped out for cool air as staying inside their thatched house became unbearable due to the hot and humid weather. Khanam says power outages were common like that night. They went separate ways, as men usually gather near matabari (embankment) — less than 200 metres away where some villagers fish. That was the last time the 30-year-old saw her husband alive.
