A popular walk-up food pantry in Dubuque was permanently removed late last week due to people regularly dumping trash and old furniture at the site. The pantry, made up of three wooden boxes and a cooler, was dubbed the “Big Purple Mini Mini Mall” and was located in the parking lot of Romper Stomper Childcare Center at the intersection of 23rd Street and Central Avenue.

Dubuque woman pleads guilty to neglect in death of infant son

A Dubuque woman has pleaded guilty to a felony charge in connection with the death of her infant son in 2023. Valessa T. Matlock, 25, pleaded guilty in Iowa District Court of Dubuque County to a charge of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. The plea was accepted by District Court Judge Thomas Bitter. Matlock’s sentencing has been set for May 19. Prosecutors are recommending a 10-year prison sentence.
