A NEW MUSEUM in Dublin promises something “different” for locals and tourists alike. The Museum of Curiosities on Pembroke Street, which opened at the end of May, houses an array of strange and scary items spanning centuries. “There are some very niche Facebook groups out there,” says Paul Mangan, who founded the museum. “I’ve been collecting strange stuff all my life.”The strange stuff includes a mummified cat, 19th century torture devices, clowns, and lots of creepy dolls.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS been accused of making “sacrificial lambs” of renters, as new regulations will extend Rent Pressure Zones, but landlords won’t be subject to the 2% cap for new tenancies. The reforms will also put a six-year-minimum on tenancies for the first time, to be rolled out from 1 March 2026, which will ban no-fault evictions for larger landlords. However, after the six years is up, landlords can reset the rent at market rate, avoiding the 2% cap on rent increases.

A NEW AD campaign by the Road Safety Authority shows blood on the hands of those who drink drive, as well as those who don’t call it out. It’s reminiscent of the shocking early-2000s road safety ads, which the RSA had departed from in recent years. It centres a man who enters a pub and sits with his friends, putting his car keys on the table.

THE REFORMED RENT regulations will be “well-balanced” and “reasonable,” the housing minister has said, as the government is expected to scrap the 2% cap on rent increases for new tenancies. Under the proposal, rents for existing tenants in the entire country will be brought under control under the current Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) system that is currently in place.

AROUND 50 IRISH people will take part in a march from Cairo to Gaza this month, demanding Israel open the Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid through. The delegation, which will join 2,500 other people from 60 countries, will walk through the desert for two days in hopes of drawing attention to Israel’s ongoing siege of Gaza. They will meet in Cairo on 13 June and depart the next day for the Sinai Desert, where temperatures reach highs of 32 to 35 degrees Celsius at this time of year.
