ONE THIRD OF people who died in road traffic collisions this year were under 30 years of age. That’s according to gardaí and the Road Safety Authority (RSA), who are warning drivers ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend to take care on the roads. A total of 48 people have died on Irish roads so far this year. The number of drivers and pedestrians that have been killed on Irish roads from January to March was above average when compared to the same period over the past five years.

THERE WERE ONLY 41 homes available to Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) recipients in March, representing 4% of total properties available. Of these, only four were available through standard HAP limits, while the rest were in the ‘discretionary’ limits. The latest report by the Simon Communities also reveals that only three out of the 41 were suitable for a single person or a couple household. All three properties were in Dublin City North.

AN IRISH WOMAN who was raped in Portugal in 2007 has lodged an application before the European Court of Human Rights over the Portuguese authorities’ alleged “failure to properly investigate” the incident. Hazel Behan, who is from Westmeath, was attacked in her apartment in Praia da Rocha, Algarve, a 30-minute drive from where three-year-old Madeleine McCann was abducted in the Praia da Luz resort in May 2007.

HSE CEO BERNARD Gloster has accepted the report from the ‘Grace’ case inquiry, which found no evidence of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. However, he said, there was a significant lack of oversight in her care and “we will never know the full life experience of Grace”. The case concerns a young woman with profound intellectual disabilities who was left in a foster home in the Waterford area for almost 20 years, despite a succession of sexual and physical abuse allegations.
