PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Elementary school students from across the southside region are getting to explore different career paths this week. Nearly 200 4th and 5th graders are participating in the Piedmont Regional Governor’s School summer program at Chatham High School. The academically gifted students are selected from schools across Danville and Martinsville, and Pittsylvania, Campbell, Halifax, Henry, Bedford and Franklin Counties.

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - The five brand-new homes on Seminole Drive show progress in Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to turn people’s dreams of homeownership into a reality. It’s the start of the England Trail subdivision that will eventually include 17 homes, green space, and walking trails. The Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity started the project in 2022 after a local church donated the land.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Hundreds of enslaved African American graves located at the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill are being moved to another location. The Regional Industrial Facility Authority, a partnership between Danville and Pittsylvania County, acquired the Berry Hill Megasite in 2008. Through the development process, they identified multiple historic sites, including the Oak Hill Plantation and the graves of over 300 enslaved people.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Fire departments in Henry County are going to start charging for services to help with the rising costs of operations. The eight fire departments within the county will soon be billing for emergency calls like fires or crashes. The charges will be sent to the person’s insurance company. If a person does not have insurance, they will not be billed. Matthew Tatum who oversees public safety says each department should see an additional $5000 per year.
