DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Danville’s focus on promoting outdoor recreation and its emphasis on connecting youth to nature has earned the city national recognition. Danville was recently named a Nature Everywhere Community by the Children and Nature Network. Danville is the first city in Virginia to receive the national award. “The Nature Everywhere award is a big achievement for us,” said Jason Bookheimer, Division Director of Community Recreation.

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Danville will not be raising utility costs for customers. The City Council voted against increasing utility rates despite recommendations from the Utility Commission. The city manager says this leaves a $6.2 million deficit for water, sewer, gas, and electric operations. Larking says they are looking at using casino revenue funds to fill the gap which he says is caused by inflation and personnel costs.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Henry County is building single-family homes to address the affordable housing shortage. A few years ago, Henry County removed several dilapidated homes in the Villa Heights neighborhood on Stultz Road. Now, thirteen two- to three-bedroom homes will be built on the vacant lots. The County will then sell the houses for what it cost to build them, which Planning and Zoning Director Lee Clark says will be around $200,000.

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - The Danville Fire Department has received a major gift from Caesars Virginia to help protect the community. Tuesday morning, Caesars Virginia invited members of the fire department to celebrate the donation of a $1.6 million fire truck. “This truck is a huge addition to what we already have here in Danville, so that this makes our firefighting capabilities much more effective and efficient,” said Chief David Coffey with the Danville Fire Department.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Henry County has made a deal with a company for the potential purchase of an industrial site for development. The Patriot Centre II Industrial Park off Barrows Mill Road has been in the County’s possession for nearly 20 years. But the county recently entered an agreement with an undisclosed company for the potential sale of the 1,200-acre site.
