Urban drivers know how congested and slow the daily commute has become. The propensity for oversized utility vehicles and pickups only makes it worse, as do all those delivery vehicles and monster-size commercial transports. With all this motorized mayhem, a case can be made for selecting the electric Fiat 500e as a daily-chores companion. This isn’t the 500e’s first rodeo; the pint-sized EV made a brief appearance for the 2017 model year.

In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a dearth of inexpensive new cars available to buyers. Many smaller models from a variety of automakers have been retired lately with more slated to depart. Fortunately, the subcompact Hyundai Venue is still with us, and at a price that shouldn’t put a huge dent in your savings account. The Venue arrived for the 2020 model year and has received only a few minor updates since.

Seemingly lost in the glut of utility vehicles and so-called crossovers, plus myriad electric vehicles, are small and inexpensive cars. One of the last still standing – at least for now – is the humble Nissan Versa. Not too long ago, buyers could choose from subcompacts such as the Chevrolet Sonic, Honda Fit, Mitsubishi Mirage, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. Today, all but the Mirage and Versa have passed on.

The mellowing of electric-vehicle adoption hasn’t prevented General Motors from introducing several such models, specifically for the Chevrolet and Cadillac brands. In particular, Chevrolet has three available, including the Blazer EV. A fourth – the Corvette EV – is expected sometime in 2025, with others reportedly in the development stage. The scalable platform, which is used for all GM EVs, large and small, can handle front, rear or front and rear electric motors.
