Introduction Shifting baseline syndrome is a phenomenon that occurs when the knowledge or experience of previous human generations is forgotten or ignored, such that over time, the present environmental state (that is changed) is considered the norm (Pauly 1995, Manning et al. 2006, Papworth et al. 2009, Soga and Gaston 2018). Without recognition of this phenomenon, it can be easy to inadvertently overlook the full extent of a species' decline (McDowell 2014, Faurby and Araújo 2018, Price et al.
