    Almost every academic newsletter I receive nowadays includes announcements of somebody winning an award. But below their shiny surface, I find that such announcements carry a whiff of ambiguity. I start thinking about how winners are selected, who is left out and why, and whether the research community could do this award-giving business better. Research that I and my colleagues have done shows that things could indeed be done a whole lot better.
