For the past decade, Father Gebez Sahilu Degen has awoken from his bed in the town of Lalibela in the northern Amhara region of Ethiopia before the sun has had a chance to rise. He slowly ambles his way down dark streets towards the town’s centuries-old rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that some consider the eighth wonder of the world.
