NZ hip-hop icon King Kapisi has teamed up with Mastercard to help celebrate small businesses in Aotearoa that have reached the milestone of being in business for a decade. Stats NZ’s latest figures showed that among all businesses founded in the country a decade ago, fewer than one in three remain today. That number drops to a quarter for those in accommodation and food services and retail trade.

A new study has shown that despite decades of efforts to boost the number of Māori and Pasifika doctors, they remain underrepresented in the country’s medical schools. The number of Māori doctors in New Zealand has risen from 2.3% of doctors in 2000 to 4.7% in 2023 but still falls below the population’s 16.5% Māori representation. The percentage of Pasifika doctors is gradually increasing, currently at 2.2% of all doctors but still below the overall Pasifika population of 8.2%.

Former NRL player Adam Blair (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa) has been named the head coach of the Māori All-Stars ahead of the 2024 edition of the All-Stars matchup between the Māori and indigenous teams. NRL.com says Blair takes over from 2023 coach Ben Gardiner, who is unavailable due to work with the 2023 NRL Premiership winners, the Penrith Panthers. The 37-year-old former Kiwi has been in the Māori All-Stars as captain in 2019 and 2020.

International rugby league history has been made by the 2023 Golden Boot winners James Fisher-Harris, Georgia Hale and Jérémy Bourson. The win for Kiwis captain Fisher-Harris (Ngāpuhi) caps off a stellar 2023, winning his third straight NRL Premiership with the Penrith Panthers and taking skipper duties for the first time in the Kiwis jersey, which he helped lead his team to a Pacific Cup medal.
