Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are bright, thermonuclear explosions of carbon–oxygen white dwarfs in a binary system (e.g. see Maguire 2017). They are excellent distance indicators, were used for the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the Universe (Riess et al. 1998; Perlmutter et al. 1999), and play a central role in precisely constraining the properties of dark energy, for example its equation of state (w) and time dependence (w ) (Brout et al. 2022; Dark Energy Survey Collaboration 2024).
