MARINE PARK — In 2001, the 41st Assembly District Lew Fidler Democrats Club held their first Toys for Tots holiday toy drive in a relatively small storefront space on Avenue R near Haring Street. Twenty-three years later, the club continues to dedicate the event to the memory of Fidler, who died in 2019. The former Brooklyn city councilmember and longtime Democratic politician represented Bergen Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Marine Park, Mill Basin and Canarsie in the City Council from 2002 until 2013.

The Kings County Criminal Bar Association held its final CLE seminar of the year on Dec. 5, focusing on the work of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU). The seminar, hosted at the Brooklyn Bar Association, was titled “Inside the Brooklyn Conviction Review Unit” and presented by Charles Linehan, the unit’s chief, and Celia Gordon, a senior assistant district attorney. Linehan, a former Manhattan prosecutor and private investigator, has led the CRU since January 2022.

Jeffrey Maddrey, the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, resigned abruptly late Friday night following allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of overtime privileges. Maddrey, who served as chief of the department since December 2022, stepped down just as investigations were launched by multiple agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
