I have always been a weird girl. In fact, I have made my career out of it. It’s something I embrace now, but it caused me great pain in my younger years. I remember how painful it was not to be like other people. To be taller, or shorter, or to think differently, or to experience the world in ways that were seen as deviant to the norm. I could feel my difference. It wasn’t something you could see. It was the wrong runners. What my mum put on my sandwiches. It was my scabbed knees. My tallness.

For years I have done a joke about my husband snoring. The truth is – my husband doesn’t really snore. He makes that weird breathing sound that’s a bit like a tiny leak in an air mattress. It’s annoying, but still kind of cute. The snorer was an ex. He snored like a chainsaw. I didn’t sleep but I got a joke that I have used for over 20 years. I told all the partners who came after that, if they loved me they had to accept that everyone would come to believe they had sleep apnoea. I snore. It’s karma.

Can you learn to be funny? If you had asked me 30 years ago I would have said ‘no’. That was before Alison Pearl, the human Energiser Bunny, dancing queen, and long-standing Chair of the Byron Adult Community College asked me to run a stand-up comedy course. I thought she was crazy. You can’t teach comedy? It’s innate. You are either funny or you’re not. Who would want to watch a bunch of locals try comedy? Even more concerning – who the hell would want to do this to themselves?

Why do we sing ‘Happy Birthday’? It’s an awful little song. It’s weird and depressing. It’s age inappropriate for anyone over ten years old. It feels daggy and inauthentic. Sad. Lost. It makes me feel funny inside. But if it’s someone’s birthday it’s my go to, because it’s all we have.

We need to value and learn from the stories of older women. This week sees International Women’s Day and Seniors’ Week intersect. I reflected on the themes for both, with Seniors’ being ‘Time to Shine’ and IWD being ‘Accelerate Action – to collectively forge a more inclusive world for women’. It occurred to me that it is the older generation of women who have forged our path, many of them doing the work but missing out on the end results of their activism and courage. That makes me a little sad.
