IN a significant political development, one of Africa’s powerful political sons has abandoned his presidential bid and thrown his weight behind his father, potentially paving the way for one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state to extend his rule. Reuters reports that Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, announced on Saturday his decision to withdraw from the 2026 presidential race. Instead, he urged his supporters to back his father’s re-election bid.

PAUSES in the fighting in Gaza held on enough for the UN-led mass vaccination against polio to be rolled out and thousands more children received their dose, in addition to the 87,000 who received their first round on Sunday, UN agencies said. “There were 87,000 vaccinated on the first day out of 156,000 that we are hoping to reach in the Middle Area,” said Louise Wateridge, Senior Communications Officer for UNWRA, the largest UN agency in the Gaza Strip.

EGYPT needs to import around $1.18 billion worth of mazut fuel oil and natural gas to end persistent power cuts exacerbated by consecutive heat waves, its Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said in a televised address. It hopes the shipments will arrive in full around the third week of July, by which point the government aims to stop cutting power during the remaining summer months, he added.

DENMARK’S Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen walked away following an assault by a man in central Copenhagen and had no outward signs of harm, a resident told Reuters. “Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was beaten on Friday evening at Kultorvet (square, red.) in Copenhagen by a man who was subsequently arrested. The Prime Minister is shocked by the incident,” her office said without giving further detail.
