A week after the Election Commission (EC) announced the date of the Milkipur Assembly bypoll, the BJP on Tuesday fielded Chandrabhan Paswan as its candidate from the constituency near Ayodhya. The bypoll will see the BJP attempt to avenge its loss to the Samajwadi Party (SP) from the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency, of which Milkipur is a part, in last year’s parliamentary elections.

ANTICIPATING NEARLY 40 crore visitors for the Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented comprehensive measures to protect pilgrims from cyber fraud and cheating, such as releasing a list of accommodation facilities and vehicle fare rates to prevent overcharging. Pilgrims have started arriving in Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, which began on Monday and will conclude on February 26.

The Anti-Corruption Organization (ACO) of the Uttar Pradesh Police has booked a former district minority welfare officer and a junior clerk for alleged large-scale irregularities in the minority welfare department in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda. The action has been taken based on a preliminary inquiry conducted on a complaint by BJP MP Kirti Vardhan Singh. The police said accused Amarjeet Singh served as the district minority welfare officer in Gonda from 2013 to 2015.

After the Varanasi Municipal Corporation issued notices to 26 meat shop owners within a 2-kilometre radius of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the Chowk area, directing them to shut down for allegedly “violating rules”, the Varanasi police have registered an FIR against 10 of them. The police said the case was filed at the Chowk and Dashashwamedh police stations based on a complaint by the municipal veterinary officer.
