The bypoll will see the BJP attempt to avenge its loss to the Samajwadi Party (SP) from the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency, of which Milkipur is a part, in last year’s parliamentary elections.

ANTICIPATING NEARLY 40 crore visitors for the Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented comprehensive measures to protect pilgrims from cyber fraud and cheating, such as releasing a list of accommodation facilities and vehicle fare rates to prevent overcharging. Pilgrims have started arriving in Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, which began on Monday and will conclude on February 26.

The Anti-Corruption Organization (ACO) of the Uttar Pradesh Police has booked a former district minority welfare officer and a junior clerk for alleged large-scale irregularities in the minority welfare department in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda. The action has been taken based on a preliminary inquiry conducted on a complaint by BJP MP Kirti Vardhan Singh. The police said accused Amarjeet Singh served as the district minority welfare officer in Gonda from 2013 to 2015.

After the Varanasi Municipal Corporation issued notices to 26 meat shop owners within a 2-kilometre radius of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the Chowk area, directing them to shut down for allegedly “violating rules”, the Varanasi police have registered an FIR against 10 of them. The police said the case was filed at the Chowk and Dashashwamedh police stations based on a complaint by the municipal veterinary officer.

THE VARANASI Municipal Corporation has issued notices to the owners of 26 meat shops operating within a two-kilometre radius of the Vishwanath temple in the Chowk area of the district, directing them to shut down as they are “violating rules”. Officials said the directive to close the shops was issued on the basis of a resolution passed by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation last year, which bans the operation of shops within a two-kilometre radius of the Vishwanath Temple.

Eight-five sub-stations have been installed to illuminate the Maha Kumbh area spread over more than 4,000 hectares, officials said. The officials concerned have estimated the electricity consumption during the 45-day event at Rs 30 crore. Nearly 2 lakh units of electricity will be consumed daily, they added. As many as 52,000 electric poles, 70,000 LED lights and 2,016 solar hybrid lights have been installed in the area.

The UP government has begun collecting details about the cases registered during the Sambhal riots of 1978 which left 15 people dead and 21 injured. According to the Sambhal police, 162 cases were registered at the Kotwali police station in the district during the violence. Of these, one case, which involved multiple deaths, was handed over to the UP Police’s Crime Branch CID for investigation, while the remaining cases were investigated by the local police.

A DAY after members of a local Hindu outfit reopened a temple in Firozabad’s Rasoolpur area that had been closed for over three decades, members of other Hindu organisations began excavating a site in the district’s Kashmiri Gate area on Tuesday, believing that a temple buried for more than six decades might be unearthed, police said. The members believe that around 60 per cent of the temple is buried approximately 10 feet underground.

A local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur Saturday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2007 kidnapping of a 23-year-old son of a renowned doctor in the district. The accused were caught while attempting to collect the ransom they had demanded for the victim’s release. A ninth accused was sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in a police encounter, though investigators found no evidence linking him to the kidnapping.
