In her new collection Wild Women, poet Arundhathi Subramaniam delves deep into the far past, discovering some hitherto unknown subcontinental poets, mostly sacred and divine. The volume is divided into three parts — ‘Mystics, Seekers, and Devotees’; ‘Women as Protagonists’; and ‘Goddesses’ — and Subramaniam traverses these different worlds with dexterity. Putting together the work of multiple translators must have been quite a task; over 20 are featured in the book.

Every Saturday, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who is from the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), visits the Appa Paithiyasamy temple next to JIPMER hospital, engages in a deep conversation with God, meditates, and serves food to about 300 people. Over the many years that he has been in and out of power, Rangasamy, the longest serving Chief Minister of Puducherry, has been insistent that he adhere to this ritual. “It was a massive procession with chants of Jai Shri Ram. But I did not participate in it,” said a resident of Nanganallur, a Chennai suburb. He was referring to a procession along the streets of the suburb after the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. “I have never seen such a huge procession in this area before,” he said, using Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shri Ram interchangeably when describing the fervour and the party associated with it.
