A short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown will be voted on by the Republican-controlled Senate this week. The bill must pass and be signed into law by President Donald Trump before midnight this Friday to avert a government shutdown. The bill narrowly passed the House of Representatives earlier this week in a 217 to 213 vote, with only one Democrat, Representative Jared Golden of Maine, voting yes. Only one Republican, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, voted against the legislation.

The first weekend of 2025 will have the coldest air of the season, according to the National Weather Service. The first significant winter storm of the year will impact 62 million people starting Saturday afternoon and continuing into Monday. Heavy snow, ice, rain and severe thunderstorms will be unleashed from the Plains to the East Coast. While snow and ice has been limited to the northern states this winter, the upcoming storm will impact areas less prone to winter weather.
