In the moment, with the Mets trailing 6-0, it looked like Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was trying to spark something, pinch-hitting Ronny Mauricio in Baty’s place. Negative. After Sunday’s 9-0 loss to the Rays, Mendoza revealed that Baty had suffered right groin tightness while trying to make a play in the top of the seventh inning. “He’s day-to-day,” Mendoza said.

NEW YORK — It was supposed to be slugger Juan Soto’s great Mets homecoming. Instead, the spotlight turned to first baseman Pete Alonso, who ended his first at bat with a curtain call. It started in pre-game ceremonies, when the loudest ovations went to the top three hitters in the Mets’ lineup, shorstop Francisco Lindor, Soto and Alonso — in that order. Fans even ate into left fielder Brandon Nimmo’s introduction, chanting Alonso’s name.

He’s informed José Buttó, a natural starter, that he’ll be working out of the bullpen this season and told Tylor Megill, who’s in his fourth spring training with the team, that he’ll be fighting for the final spot in the rotation.
