I’m very much a behind-the-scenes kind of person. I don’t like being the center of attention. That’s probably part of why I liked being a newspaper reporter. I was usually on the other side of the camera. I asked the questions and I took photos and videos. And it very much suits my personality. I’m endlessly curious about people. I love to meet new people and hear their stories, but I do much better one-on-one or in smaller settings.

Today is Earth Day. The grass-roots effort was first celebrated in spring 1970 as a way to draw attention to environmental issues. At that time, 20 million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities. As a result, in December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Earth Day has become a worldwide phenomenon, with billions of people celebrating it across the world.

In a matter of months, my mom’s five-dog pack dwindled down to a single dog. The dogs first came to live with me when my mom moved to Yuma after she could no longer live alone in my hometown due to health reasons. After years of being a feline-only household, we suddenly had five dogs too. The Shih Tzus were cute and fluffy and I loved them, having known them since they were puppies. The pack consisted of dad, mom and their three puppies.

Weddings and funerals. It’s at these occasions when we meet up with family and friends. That has been the case for me recently. My mom’s only surviving sister died a few months ago and just a couple of weeks ago, my mom lost her best friend. Family and friends gathered in Nogales, my hometown, for memorial talks, but, because my mom is unable to travel, she and I watched both proceedings via Zoom.
