The Al Hirschfeld Theatre, currently home to Moulin Rouge!, turns 100 today. The theatre, which opened November 11, 1924 as the Martin Beck Theatre, is the westernmost Broadway theatre still operating within the midtown Broadway theatre district. Designed by architect G. Albert Lansburgh, the large, grandiose venue is located just west of Eighth Avenue at 302 West 45th Street. Renamed for celebrity caricaturist Al Hirschfeld in 2003, the theatre remains one of the most unique theatres on Broadway.

May 23 marks the 103rd anniversary of Shuffle Along's premiere on Broadway, which changed the Main Stem forever. The musical revue broke ground as the first all-Black musical hit on Broadway, and helped to usher in the Harlem Renaissance, kickstarting the careers of a wide range of Black artists. Following a tour through New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Shuffle Along premiered on Broadway May 23, 1921.
