Bishop Eustace is an annual contender for a sectional baseball title and this year should be no different. The Crusaders are in South Jersey Non-Public B, a Group in which Gloucester Catholic has enjoyed recent dominance. Gloucester Catholic has won five of the last seven South Jersey Non-Public B titles, and is also the two-time defending state champion. Last year Bishop Eustace advanced to the sectional final before losing a 2-1 classic to Gloucester Catholic.

We keep hearing about small sample size, but when the Phillies won at Cleveland, 3-0 on Sunday night, it improved their record to 24-16. That is basically one-fourth of the season. The sample size continues to grow. Here are some observations on the Phillies after the first quarter of a season:Kyle Schwarber should be resigned. Schwarber will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. He signed with the Phillies, four years and $79 million according to Spotrac.com.

Late-game heroics by Luca Bruno and a dominant performance by left-hander Finn Haines has propelled Mainland to the championship of the 51st annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic championship. Bruno’s walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning gave No. 15-seeded Mainland a 3-2 win over No. 6-seed Delsea in Saturday’s semifinal game at Ocean City. Mainland (14-8), winners of seven straight, will face Haddonfield in Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. championship at Pitman’s Alcyon Park.

For the first time this year, there is a new No. 1 team, Cherokee, which replaced Gloucester Catholic. The Rams had been on top since the preseason. On Saturday Cherokee and Gloucester Catholic meet in a Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic quarterfinal. This ranking saw a major shakeup as 13 of last week's Mean 15 teams lost at least once. Records are through Wednesday May 7. Cherokee (18-0, last week’s ranking 3). Wednesday’s 10-3 win over Shawnee was the eighth time the Chiefs have scored 10 or more runs.

By Marc NarducciFor the Courier-PostThe 51st annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic goes into full gear this weekend with quarterfinal and semifinal games both on Saturday. Two quarterfinals and then a semifinal game will be played at both Pitman’s Alcyon Park and Ocean City High School. The final will be Tuesday, May 13 at Alcyon Park. In the quarterfinals, many teams will be going with their aces, so we should see some of South Jersey’s best pitchers performing on Saturday.
