In desperation mode, the Bulldogs knotted the game, 1-1, with 53 seconds left before they sealed the game with a strike as the game clock hit zero.

    Iowa City West track athlete Mason Woods and Iowa City Liberty track athlete Alexi Thigpen were voted by readers as the Press-Citizen’s Athletes of the Week for May 19-25. Woods earned boys Athlete of the Week with 57% of the vote. The senior Trojan clinched the Class 4A long jump state title at the Iowa high school state track and field meet on May 23. The Iowa football commit nabbed a school record of 23 feet, 4 ½ inches.

    Wearing the white and orange colors of Solon girls soccer, junior midfielder Sofia Ortega collected the ball on the right side of the field before she uncorked a rainbow shot towards the Iowa City Regina goalkeeper. As players from Solon and Regina swarmed inches from the target zone, senior Addi Greene found an opening and chipped in a goal that increased the Spartans’ lead, 2-0, in the 38th minute.

    The Iowa high school state track and field meet headlined the slate of action this past week. The three-day spectacular ran from May 22 to May 24. Clear Creek Amana boys placed third in the Class 3A team race while Iowa City West boys ranked fifth in Class 4A. While it was action-packed in Des Moines, the top soccer, tennis and golf players also had great performances. The Iowa high school baseball season also began.
