Iowa City Liberty softball player Kaelyn Rickels and Iowa City West baseball player Chase Bopp were voted by readers as the Press-Citizen’s Athlete of the Week for June 2-8. Rickels earned boys Athlete of the Week with 54% of the vote. Rickels posted a strong performance in the circle during Liberty softball's 5-0 shutout win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy on June 4. The senior pitcher allowed just one hit through seven scoreless innings and tossed six strikeouts against the Cougars.

Just a few hours removed from a 5-4 win over Dubuque Senior in the opening game of a doubleheader, the Iowa City High baseball team completed the sweep with a game two victory at Mercer Park on June 11. Backed by a strong performance by senior Parker Sutherland, coupled with a great defensive effort, the Little Hawks earned a 4-2 home win over the Rams and improved to 14-5 on the season. “We’ve had a long week with baseball games,” said City High coach Brian Mitchell.

Marc RayIowa City Press-CitizenWith the ball at her feet five minutes into the match, Iowa City Liberty girls soccer sophomore Morgan Bennett launched a shot that deflected off the hands of the Bettendorf goalkeeper, trickled past the goal line and gave the Lightning an early 1-0 lead. But that lead was erased in the final minute of the game. In desperation mode, the Bulldogs knotted the game, 1-1, with 53 seconds left before they sealed the game with a strike as the game clock hit zero.

Iowa City West track athlete Mason Woods and Iowa City Liberty track athlete Alexi Thigpen were voted by readers as the Press-Citizen’s Athletes of the Week for May 19-25. Woods earned boys Athlete of the Week with 57% of the vote. The senior Trojan clinched the Class 4A long jump state title at the Iowa high school state track and field meet on May 23. The Iowa football commit nabbed a school record of 23 feet, 4 ½ inches.
