Marine microfossil assemblages refine sea surface temperature patterns and yield insights into discrepancies between paleoclimate models of the last ice age and observations. Future changes in ocean circulation and the global distribution of heat will define the spatial pattern of many ecosystems on which society depends. Global climate models are excellent tools to help us understand how future climate change will affect the spatial distribution of heat in the ocean, but they are imperfect.
