Bluegrass and Chiefs red came together under the green Reality Check logo Saturday afternoon for an open jam and a special birthday party that was all about the music. Reality Check, 320 Commercial St., opened its doors in September 2024. “We wanted to create a safe space for kids to hang out,” explained owner Jason Heffron. “There’s just not a lot for them to do in town, to socialize. After Covid–the isolation–for the younger kids, that’s all they know.

“Conversation surrounding the 250th anniversary of America has been ongoing for a few years at the national and state levels,” Lyon County History Center Deputy Director Lisa Soller said at Monday afternoon’s America 250 informational meeting at the History Center. Soller explained to the dozen-plus people attending the meeting that for the past two years LCHC has co-hosted events with the Emporia chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

“Well, Steve Kaniper’s usually the guy to talk to about Chick Day,” said Kelly Krueger at the Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply front counter. “He says he’s the chick magnet. But he’s not here today.”Luckily, Krueger and John Whittredge were at work Saturday morning for the first Chick Day of 2025 at Bluestem. Both of them have more than a glancing acquaintance with chickens themselves. To baby chick purveyors Alan and Jackie Nieder of Heartland Hatchery out of Amsterdam, Mo., it is a way of life.
