More than 200 auto dealers across the country were “stiffed” when Tesla “had a run on the bank,” claiming tens of millions of dollars in EV rebates on the last weekend before the government abruptly shut down the public subsidy program in January. Now these independently owned dealerships are out of pocket an estimated $10 million, having provided 2,295 rebates to customers and expecting to get reimbursed, according to the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA).

Rising natural gas prices have prompted Enbridge to issue a public notice that an unusually large hike to gas bills is on the way. According to a letter sent to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), the price of gas is set to go up between 21 and 47 per cent for different regions of the province on April 1, though Enbridge plans to spread out some of that increase over time. This could add as much as $189 to an average annual gas bill, the letter states — the equivalent of $15.75 per month.

Ontario has never burned so much natural gas to make electricity, firing up the polluting plants more often than at any time since the first ones were built in the 1990s. According to year-end data from the Independent Electricity Systems Operator, the gas plants produced 24.6 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024 — a nearly 30 per cent jump from the previous year.

While loud voices on social media seem to indicate that consumers are turning away from Tesla in protest after Musk took up a prominent role in U.S. President Donald Trump’s new administration, which has aggressively targeted both climate action and Canada, the numbers do not reflect this.
