Canada has frozen $43 million in payments to Tesla pending a line-by-line investigation into its last-minute surge in EV rebate claims made on the final weekend of the government program. The American EV maker run by U.S. presidential adviser Elon Musk will also be excluded from all future EV rebate programs as long as tariffs are in place, Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement.

The rules for Canada’s defunct EV rebate program have been quietly loosened in a way that would have allowed the mass filing that Tesla carried out as the program expired, the Star has discovered. Four Tesla locations claimed $43.1 million in rebates for sales of 8,653 electric vehicles over a 72-hour period in January.

This report is misleading and inaccurate. It's irrelevant that Tesla remains on the "eligible" list for a defunct rebate program that no longer gives out money. Pending investigation, Freeland froze final payouts to Tesla after it claimed to have sold 2 cars/min for 72 hrs.

.@CaFreeland faked election claim to @TorontoStar & @CBCNews that she was "freezing" Tesla rebates to punish USA. Tesla remains on eligibility list. No comment from @Transport_Gc. https://t.co/EosgVfepHx #cdnpoli https://t.co/b8RcTNQPe2
