Ian Machado Garry suffered the first defeat of his UFC career, losing a narrow points decision to Shavkat Rakhmanov at UFC 310 in Las Vegas. The Kazakh fighter, whose record moves to 19-0, had never previously gone the distance as he failed to finish his opponent for the first time, but won on all three judges’ scorecards 48-47.

Mark Cavendish is set to bring down the curtain on his career at the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium 2024, organisers have said. Cavendish won his 35th stage at the Tour de France in July to break Eddy Merckx’s record, but has not raced competitively since. The Manx Missile had already confirmed he would not race next year’s Tour, but is yet to officially confirm his retirement. The 39-year-old’s contract at Astana-Qazaqstan expires at the end of the season.

Roger Federer admitted he "hoped this day would never come" as he led the tributes to Rafael Nadal, who announced he will retire from tennis at the end of the season.
