Editor’s note: this list was originally published in February 2024. It has since been updated in honor of Juneteenth. When putting together a list of the 30 Best Black Films of the 21st century, you first have to recognize that Black entertainers have been a part of cinema for almost as long as it has existed. They have been captured on film riding horses, performing elaborate, elite dance numbers, playing all kinds of streetwise urbanites, or agonized period characters.
