    The oldest and, at one point, largest high school west of the Mississippi River was in Phoenix for many years, and Phoenix Union High School produced notable alumni. Founded in 1895, Phoenix Union was the first major high school in the region before Arizona achieved statehood in 1912. Located near the crossroads of Van Buren and Seventh streets, the school initially operated with just four classrooms and fewer than 100 students.
