Well here we are in 2024 and it seems to be going okay so far. How is your year shaping up? Have you made any reading resolutions? I borrowed a massive stack of books from the library just before Christmas and I haven’t made much of a dent in them. I’m quite a fast reader, but I think I over-estimated how much reading I could fit in over the holiday period. I also under-estimated the amount of television I would consume. Oh well…I managed to finish a couple of quirky books, so let’s dive in.

Hello reading friends! We are getting to the pointy end of the year where nerves are sometimes frazzled, so I hope you can find a few minutes to enjoy this newsletter. Let’s dive in…I have an embarrassing admission to make. I started reading The Marriage Portrait thinking it was about an entirely different person - Lucrezia Borgia to be precise. I was enjoying the book, but I kept wondering when she was going to start poisoning people.

Hello reading friends, I’m glad you’re here. If you’ve just subscribed, please pop over to my About Page to find out more about this newsletter and the kind of books I read and recommend. Let’s dive in to today’s edition. I take reading very seriously. Some may say too seriously. It could be said that I spend too much time thinking about my next read and deliberating about which book I should recommend for your reading pleasure. Should I choose something light and undemanding?

Even though I read Demon Copperfield and participated in the last book group, I enjoyed the background info you shared, Marg. I thought it was an original and well-realized idea to set the book in Appalachia and make opioid addiction a central theme. I also enjoyed the article you wrote about how you pick books to read and also decide to put them aside when they don’t interest you. I feel like I should read more books, but I am always being sidetracked by news, blogs, and life in general.

Hello reading friends,Welcome to Book Chat, a newsletter for readers and eaters. It’s great to have you here. The purpose of this newsletter is to help you find your next great read. It can be surprisingly difficult to find just the right book, despite the large number of books published each year. My goal is you help you narrow down your choices and make choosing easier. Just so you know, I only recommend books I have actually read (and finished!) and that are also available from my local library.
