The Northern Cape Department of Health say they are battling with the number of unclaimed bodies that are piling up in State mortuaries. The department says mortuaries in both Kimberley and Hartswater have large number of unclaimed bodies and that is creating challenges with storage space. Provincial Health MEC Maruping Lekwene says there is close to 100 unclaimed bodies in provincial facilities, with some being there for five months already.

Over four municipalities in the Northern Cape are contravening Section 13A of the Pension Fund Act 24 of 1956 by withholding third-party payments to various municipal pension funds. MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Venus Blennies-Magage, last month warned implicated Chief Financial Officers and senior officials that they are breaking the law and must be ready to face the consequences.

A Northern Cape man, who was found guilty of swindling a 40-year-old man out of his pension money, has been handed a suspended sentence and ordered to pay monthly instalments to the victim. The De Aar Regional Court found Michael Sebegala guilty of scamming the complainant out of over R360 000, which he claimed he was going to invest and double. Sebegala subsequently disappeared and bought a car with some of the money before he was arrested.

Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has deployed a government delegation to help the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the bus crash yesterday on the Vanrhyns Pass outside Vanrhynsdorp on the West Coast in the Western Cape. Ten construction workers from Upington lost their lives while 12 others are being treated at a hospital in Vredendal.

A Barkly West man in the Northern Cape has started serving his 15-year jail term after using a sharp object to stab his friend to death in May last year. Bongizile Dlongwane, 34 years old, was sentenced in the Barkly West Regional Court after it found him guilty of murder. The court had heard that Dlongwane attacked his friend when he found him sitting with other friends. Provincial police spokesperson Merapelo Pilane elaborates.
