This week, on the two-year anniversary of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it is awarding 18 states grants for implementation, enhancement, and expansion of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) school-based health services.

In the median school district across the 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, more than 1 in 3 (35.8%) children were insured by Medicaid/CHIP.

As a part of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the U.S. Department of Education (ED) were directed to develop a technical assistance center (TAC) to assist and expand the capacity of state Medicaid and education agencies, local education agencies, and school districts to deliver school-based services under Medicaid.

This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the much anticipated planning grants to implement or expand school-based health services for children enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP. As we’ve written about in previous blogs, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act appropriated $50 million in grants for states seeking to implement, enhance or expand services delivered by school-based entities under Medicaid or CHIP.
