John Thrasher led a remarkable life. President of Florida State University. Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Soldier, lawmaker, businessman. And family man. He died today (Friday) at the age of 81. Thrasher had a special blend of leadership qualities. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush describes himself as a “rookie governor” when he started working with the then-House Speaker.

The Leon County School Board is considering legal action against the Renaissance Academy over furniture purchased with taxpayer money. Superintendent Rocky Hanna told school board members that a routine issue with Renaissance Academy, a charter school on Mahan Drive, had become problematic. Renaissance is closing at the end of June. The Leon schools planned to recover some of the charter’s furniture to use for other schools. Then, Hanna says, things become contentious.

The Florida legislature’s republican majority remains at impasse over a state budget even as the start of the next fiscal year, looms. This comes as state agencies and others grow increasingly concerned about a possible government shutdown. A memo from the House and Senate leadership offices tells lawmakers not to plan on returning to Tallahassee before Monday, June 2nd. Initially, it was expected they’d come back after Memorial Day.

The new law also works to fill in the gaps in children’s education with specialized programs. The measure expands free screening and early detection opportunities.
