I have worked in private practice in Sydney for nearly 50 years, ran mothers’ groups and worked with young Aboriginal mothers at risk of losing custody of their children with an organisation called Parents Infants Family Australia. I have been active in protecting the environment for 50 years, all the while watching things just getting worse.

Ken Henry and I reside in Comboyne, the village on the Comboyne Plateau north of the Bulga Plateau. Ken’s father was a logger and he grew up in Taree before becoming Treasury Secretary for Peter Costello and Paul Keating and chairman of the NAB.

My first shock is being handed a nappy and a Gastro-Stop tablet before driving an hour or so along gravel roads to a lonely spot in the bush. The rain is cold as we come across a giant tree harvester in the Bulga State Forest, 100 kilometres west of Port Macquarie on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, in a clear-felled area piled with logs. A bike lock is placed around my neck and attached to the machine. The harvester tray looms above.
