Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic progressive autoimmune inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology that leads to irreversible joint damage and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality (American College of Rheumatology Subcommittee on Rheumatoid Arthritis Guidelines, 2002; Littlejohn and Monrad, Reference Littlejohn and Monrad2018). The prevalence of RA, which increases with age, is estimated to be approximately 0.5%–1% in the adult population.
