Owned by husband-and-wife pair Benjamin and Katie Rose Tyson and named for the many butter lamps the couple lit while honeymooning in Bhutan, Butterlamp is a new 42-seat wine and bread bar in the Eastwood Village development (also home to Switchyards and a great little bookstore, Novelette, among other retail). The of-the-now yet also ancient concept feels nicely anchored in the old Hobson United Methodist Church building.

The folks behind the bar and the scenes at Coral Club, a newish coastal escape-themed bar in East Nashville, may very well warrant a new twist on Nashville’s oft-heard “songwriter’s songwriter” or “musician’s musician” superlatives: the bartender’s bartender. Sharing a hospitality pedigree that is as wide as it is deep, owners and brothers Aaron and Matthew Izaguirre, alongside Brice Hoffman and Kristopher Esqueda have created a coastal-vibed getaway on Gallatin Avenue.

The first time I heard, and I mean listened to, registered, and remembered the name Gifford’s Bacon was at the East Nashville Farmers Market on a sweltering day, the blacktop so hot the market had warned shoppers via Instagram to leave their dogs at home for fear of blistered paws. I was in a shortish line waiting to buy two dozen eggs while sweating and silently cursing the man ahead of me who was deep in conversation with the vendor.

In 2019, The New York Times ran a “Scratch” doodle by Julia Rothman and Shaina Feinberg about fishmongers at the Westwego Fish Market in a suburban parish just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The colorful full-page sketch focused on how fishmongers diversify their offerings. It showed their work’s backbreaking and highly competitive nature as illustrated in out-of-the-lines watercolor-y snapshots of a day in the life.
