    At the beginning of this focused retrospective, Wayne Thiebaud’s portrait of his wife Betty Jean from 1965–69 depicts her seated, a book before her open to reproductions of drawings by Seurat and Manet. Betty Jean’s head-in-hand pose suggests several possible sources: Dürer’s Melencolia I, 1514; Ingres’s Louise, Princesse de Broglie, Later the Comtesse d’Haussonville, 1845; Degas’s Portrait of Edmond Duranty, 1879; or even Picasso’s Woman with a Book, 1932.

    Wattis Institute for Contemporary ArtsIn “STEADY” (on view through April 12, 2025), Michelle Lopez and Ester Partegàs engage in a dialogue with each other, as well as with art history, through idiosyncratic forms that deftly foreground a variety of issues and ideas. Visually weightless (or nearly so), yet radiating a kind of tensile strength, Lopez’s linear steel sculptures skewer the self-important heaviness of male-dominated Minimalism while seemingly denying gravity.

    For more than a decade, Elisheva Biernoff has painted exquisitely uncanny trompe l’oeil re-creations of vintage found photographs. Taken as a group, the snapshots on which she bases her works are of no great distinction. Some feature a failure of some kind—overexposure, lens flare, water damage, the accidental intrusion of a foot into the frame, or the glaring reflection of a flash on glass or mirror.
