Well, well, well. Elon Musk’s time working in Washington, D.C. for the federal government came to an end this week. He thanked the president and then also remarked that working in the federal government was much tougher than he anticipated. I must say I wasn’t surprised that Mr. Musk decided to leave Washington. I think people who are used to being their own bosses or running their own businesses think that running a state or a country is exactly the same. It isn’t... Politics requires consensus.

Pope Leo has had me thinking ever since I attended his inaugural mass last Sunday. I haven’t been able to shake him since I got home. There were no shortage of other stories competing for my attention this week. Some of them provoked outrage (like the news of the young Jewish couple shot outside the Israeli embassy or that people continue to starve in Gaza).

Mary Oliver once wrote, “Keep room in your heart for the unimaginable.” I love that sentiment, and this week I did just that. I made room in my heart and my mind for the unimaginable. I ended up in Rome for the Pope’s invocation mass!A week ago, that was beyond belief. And yet here I am. Oprah, my girlfriend of four decades, called me last week and said, “Guess what? We got invited to Rome to go to the Pope’s inauguration.”“Are you serious?” I said.

Holy smokes! I’m beside myself with joy. I’m beside myself with excitement. I’m bursting with hope. Yes, I am. Yes, it’s Mother’s Day (and I gotta admit, I love Mother’s Day), but the real reason I’m beside myself is because we, and I mean the big collective we—you, me, all of us—have a new pope: Pope Leo XIV. And an American one at that! For the first time in history!Think about that, my friends. We are living right in the middle of a historic event. Let’s take it in. Let’s absorb the moment.

I was so looking forward to being home this week. I’ve been out on the road for the last month, and I’m heading out again next week—this time to Dallas. But both my actual home and my “home within” felt upside down this week. One of those is easier to explain. I’m moving back into my home—or at least trying to—after living in a rental for the past year. But it’s the “home within” that felt the most disrupted.

I’m thrilled and excited to see the choice of Cardinal Robert Prevost as our new pope! How truly exciting to see a pope, not just who is American, but from my hometown of Chicago — born just 2 months before me. Pope Leo seems to be the kind of voice the world needs now.
