I didn’t know Minnesota’s Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman or her husband, Mark, but when I read the news early Saturday that they had been assassinated in cold blood at their home, by a man masquerading as a police officer, tears immediately welled up in my eyes. Then I read that another Democratic lawmaker, Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, had also been shot and were in surgery (they are expected to survive).

Elon Musk went off the rails this week, but I’ve got to admit that I wasn’t surprised. In fact, I’ve been waiting for this moment. That said, I can’t believe how embarrassing and depressing it was to watch the fighting that unfolded between him and Trump. Pope Leo has had me thinking ever since I attended his inaugural mass last Sunday. I haven’t been able to shake him since I got home. There were no shortage of other stories competing for my attention this week. Some of them provoked outrage (like the news of the young Jewish couple shot outside the Israeli embassy or that people continue to starve in Gaza).

Mary Oliver once wrote, “Keep room in your heart for the unimaginable.” I love that sentiment, and this week I did just that. I made room in my heart and my mind for the unimaginable. I ended up in Rome for the Pope’s invocation mass!A week ago, that was beyond belief. And yet here I am. Oprah, my girlfriend of four decades, called me last week and said, “Guess what? We got invited to Rome to go to the Pope’s inauguration.”“Are you serious?” I said.
